Energy self-sufficient thanks to PV system
Pfenning Logistics switches to green electricity
As part of its sustainability strategy, the contract logistics service provider is installing a photovoltaic system on the roof of its administrative headquarters in Heddesheim.
This will ensure that the administration is supplied with climate-friendly electricity all year round. New charging points for cars are also being created. The administration building at the headquarters of the Pfenning Logistics group in Heddesheim was equipped with a photovoltaic system on the roof to enable a climate-neutral power supply for the administration.
In a construction phase lasting several weeks, the system was installed on a roof area of around 800 m² and integrated into the building services. A further 800 m² of roof area on the administration building, which is not suitable for installation with a PV system, was equipped with a climate-friendly green roof. The photovoltaic system converts the light energy from the sun's rays into clean electricity that can be fed directly into the building's power grid. It achieves an output of 87 kilowatts (peak), which is roughly equivalent to the annual electricity consumption of 19 four-person households. This means that the electricity requirements of the administration building, which currently employs around 90 people, will in future be covered almost entirely by the company's own photovoltaic system. Pfenning Logistics is also building a battery storage system at the administration building, which will serve as a buffer for surplus electricity generated by the PV system.
In addition, twelve wallboxes, each with two charging points, are being built where employees can charge electric vehicles. This goes hand in hand with the company's efforts to gradually convert its company and pool vehicles to hybrid and electric drives. The aim is to ensure the long-term operational readiness of the electrified car fleet.
Rana Matthias Nag, Managing Director of the Pfenning Logistics Group, is delighted about this important milestone in the sustainability strategy: "Ecologically sustainable real estate is increasingly becoming the standard in logistics too. Now that we are pioneers in this respect with our multicubes, our administration building is also making a contribution to climate protection thanks to the production of green electricity."
In addition to climate-friendly electricity generation, the administrative building has numerous resource-saving features, including heating and cooling. This is achieved by capillary tube mats in the concrete core, which enable thermal component activation. Numerous processes have already been digitally mapped in administrative and logistics operations. Since the start of the pandemic, business meetings have mainly been held digitally and necessary warehouse tours are carried out using virtual reality glasses with conference capability.
