Gebrüder Weiss delivers
IKEA's Billy goes electric
Products such as the "Billy" shelving unit from furniture manufacturer IKEA have been reaching customers in the Vienna area in zero-emission electric vehicles since October.
Gebrüder Weiss has deployed 15 new all-electric delivery vehicles from the manufacturer Quantron for its Home Delivery division. The switch to zero-emission vehicles will reduceCO2 emissions from end customer deliveries by around 150 tons per year.
In addition to delivery with electric vans, Gebrüder Weiss also provides other services with its own staff directly at the IKEA warehouse. These include the removal of goods, loading and dispatching of vehicles. Furniture and large appliances are delivered to the end customers in 2-man handling and unpacked and assembled on request. Gebrüder Weiss delivers around 60,000 consignments per year with the new e-vehicles in the greater Vienna area. The vehicles are supplied with green electricity during loading at the central warehouse. This means that the vans are immediately ready for use without any loss of time.
Emission-free delivery
"With the launch of our new electric fleet in Vienna, we are one step closer to our goal ofCO2-neutral customer delivery worldwide by 2025," says Claes Lindgren, Head of Customer Fulfillment IKEA Austria. Vienna is one of 30 major cities worldwide in which IKEA is switching to zero-emission vehicles for deliveries. With Gebrüder Weiss, says Claes Lindgren, they have a logistics provider at their side that is already successfully using various alternative drive systems in everyday logistics.
"Due to the short distances in the Vienna area and the low transport weight, the electric vehicles are ideal for our home delivery services. Especially in metropolitan areas with their high population and traffic density, the e-transporters make an important contribution to emission-free delivery traffic," says Jürgen Bauer, Member of the Management Board of Gebrüder Weiss. In the future, deliveries for IKEA customers will also be made by e-transporter in other Austrian federal states.
IKEA partner in Austria and beyond
Gebrüder Weiss has been a logistics partner of IKEA since 2017. In addition to Austria, the logistics company serves IKEA's home delivery customers in Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria and Croatia. In these countries, too, the company plans to switch to delivery with electric vans in the medium term. In Austria, Gebrüder Weiss has been operating several IKEA pick-up stations in addition to its home delivery services for almost a year. With 220,000 shipments a year, Gebrüder Weiss is the Swedish furniture company's largest logistics partner in Austria.
