Groundbreaking ceremony
Hellmann expands in Bremen
The full-service provider Hellmann Worldwide Logistics is expanding its site in Bremen and building a digitalized forwarding facility in Ludwig-Erhard-Straße. The official start of construction was sealed on November 17 at a ground-breaking ceremony on the previously undeveloped 40,000 square meter plot next to the current Hellmann site.
The new building will have a total of around 1,500 square meters of office space and 8,000 square meters of handling space with 100 gates and is scheduled for completion in the second half of 2021. This is Hellmann's response to the continuing growth trend in the general cargo and direct load product areas in the Bremen/East Frisia region.
Hellmann has been represented at the Bremen site since 1989 with a cross-product sea and land transport and contract logistics location in the GVZ - Germany's largest freight transport center. The strategically excellent transport connections, which cover the entire spectrum of combined transport with sea, rail and truck shipments, have led to steady volume growth in recent decades, which has pushed the current warehouse facility to its capacity limits.
At the same time, the new building will create the framework conditions for modern working and the digitalization of the freight forwarding world: By implementing various innovation technologies - such as digital order management at the depot - operational processes in particular are to be optimized based on data. A large part of the warehouse equipment will also be automated in the future, so that the use of Bluetooth-controlled robots and autonomous ground vehicles is already being taken into account when designing the new warehouse facility. A photovoltaic system on the roof of the hall will produce part of the electricity required sustainably and autonomously in order to supply the planned electric charging stations for e-mobility, among other things.
"We are delighted that we can continue to grow at the Bremen site and offer a whole new level of digital service quality in all product areas. With the new building, we are not only setting an example in the Hellmann world of how logistics works in the digital age," says Sven Eisfeld, Managing Director Germany, Hellmann Worldwide Logistics. "At the Bremen site, we are seeing increased demand for international transportation in Europe in particular, but also in global maritime transport. With the new facility, we are creating the conditions for this," Eisfeld continues.
