DGNB award-winning
Gebrüder Weiss honored for sustainable building
The German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB) has awarded the gold certificate to the Gebrüder Weiss logistics center in Kalsdorf near Graz for its particularly resource and environmentally friendly construction and operating concept. The assessment included ecological, economic and social aspects as well as technical features. "The award is the best proof that holistic sustainability requirements were successfully implemented in the project," explains Johannes Kreißig, Managing Director of the DGNB.
"With the standards implemented in Graz, we are setting a Group-wide quality benchmark for sustainable construction at Gebrüder Weiss. An ideal working environment for our employees is just as important to us as a resource-conserving construction method and modern energy management that optimizes energy consumption and reduces operating costs," explains Wolfram Senger-Weiss, CEO of Gebrüder Weiss. The company has already been taking sustainability aspects into account for many years when planning its logistics facilities. In the future, further facilities are to be certified throughout the Group.
The high standard includes the efficient use of high-quality building materials and the use of wood from sustainable forestry. Another criterion is the ability to convert the property: the plant in Graz is designed so that it can also be used for other purposes and can be enlarged or reduced in size module by module. A photovoltaic system produces a maximum annual electricity yield of 460 megawatt hours. This corresponds to around half of the energy requirements of the entire site.
Gebrüder Weiss put the logistics center in Graz into operation in 2021. With a 16,500 square meter logistics hall, a handling area of 6,500 square meters and 180 employees, the location is a central hub for transports to Southeast Europe.
