Future study
"Penultimate mile" underground?
Could underground transportation for supplying city centres be a conceivable alternative to "conventional" city logistics in the future? Four Parx GmbH, a project developer specializing in commercial and logistics real estate, has commissioned Smart City Loop GmbH to carry out a feasibility study on underground logistics supply and disposal in Hamburg's city centre.
Underground connection on the test bench
The aim of the study: for the first time, a concept for underground tubes as a transport system for pallets in city centers is to be tested at a specific location. A warehouse is to be connected to a distributor in the city center over a distance of around five kilometers. From this distributor, the last mile is then to be served by electric vehicles.
Francisco J. Bähr, Managing Partner of Four Parx, explains: "As an innovative developer, we want to make a contribution so that this promising concept of underground connectivity can be taken to the next stage towards concrete implementation. We have a great interest in finding new solutions. After all, we can only develop new commercial and logistics areas if we can also offer transport solutions together with the local authorities."
Save 1,000 journeys per tube
It is hoped that each tube will save up to 1,000 truck/van journeys per day. The study refers to an exemplary connection between a warehouse in Wilhelmsburg and a city or micro hub in Altona. The "Four Parx City", developed by Four Parx, is a logistics property specifically designed to meet the requirements of inner-city logistics and is planned as an exit point for the city loops.
