DB Schenker opens solar-powered logistics center in Dubai
DB Schenker has opened its first fully solar-powered logistics center in Dubai. The 33,000 square meter DLC II distribution center is located in the Dubai South logistics area, in the immediate vicinity of Al Maktoum International Airport.
The DLC II serves as a central regional logistics hub for international customers, including the consumer goods company Unilever, DB Schenker's largest local partner. Following an initial successful collaboration in Saudi Arabia, DB Schenker and Unilever officially inaugurated the site in Dubai in the presence of His Excellency Khalifa Al Zaffin (Executive Chairman, Dubai Aviation City Corporation and Dubai South).
The ceremony was attended by a delegation from Unilever as well as Xavier Garijo (Board Member Contract Logistics DB Schenker), Christopher Smith (CEO DB Schenker MEA), Ako Djaf (Head of Contract Logistics/SCM Middle East & Africa) and numerous other guests. Xavier Garijo said: "The DLC II shows: We plan and act sustainably. This makes us one of the world's leading logistics providers. We use resources in an ecologically sensible way to reduce CO2 emissions and costs. Sustainability is a real competitive advantage for our customers and for us."
The construction of the logistics center in Dubai is part of a series of "Eco Warehouses" at DB Schenker. Other eco warehouses are located in Singapore, Helsinki, Klagenfurt, Tilburg and Dortmund. In addition, DB Schenker is currently gradually converting all logistics buildings to energy-saving LED lighting. The new temperature-controlled logistics center in Dubai offers space for 90,000 euro pallets and has a 3,000 square meter mezzanine floor for value-added services.
The range of services includes hazardous goods storage, value-added services, distribution and delivery services as well as sea and air freight. DLC II is located in one of the most important duty-free areas in the region. Direct connections to Jebel Ali Port, the largest seaport in the Middle East, and to Al Maktoum International Airport enable fast and uncomplicated transportation. The completion of DLC II marks the second of three phases of the growth plan for the expansion of contract logistics in Dubai. A total of around 80,000 m² of logistics space is to be created for DB Schenker by 2021.
