Large-scale photovoltaic roof systems offer commercial and industrial companies with large halls in particular the opportunity to make a relevant contribution to the energy transition. The logistics company pfenning logistics has already seized this opportunity for the second time.

On behalf of the logistics company, Wirsol Roof Solutions in Monsheim near Worms has begun construction of a large photovoltaic rooftop system on the multicube rheinhessen. In Heddesheim, the photovoltaic experts had already installed the first system of this type with an output of 8.1 megawatt peak on the multicube rhein-neckar, which was already the largest system of its kind in Europe at the time of its completion in 2013.

"We see the realization of a second major photovoltaic project of this size for pfenning logistics as a great vote of confidence based on our expertise in the construction of very large PV roof systems for industry and commerce. With its commitment, the logistics company is making an enormous contribution to regional power generation. In this great partnership, we are jointly advancing the energy transition and making a relevant contribution to climate protection," explains Johannes Groß, Managing Director of Wirsol Aufdach GmbH.

"With our multicube concept, we are committed to sustainable and resource-conserving construction methods and the most efficient use of all areas. With Wirsol roof solutions, we are now realizing our second major project together and want to make our contribution to the generation of renewable energies. Now that the multicube rheinhessen has already been awarded the highest platinum standard by the German Sustainable Building Council, we are proud to be able to produce green electricity on site," says Torsten Radszuweit, Head of Real Estate and Purchasing at pfenning logistics group.

"We are delighted that the pfenning logistics group has initiated the realization of a photovoltaic system on the roof of the multicube rheinhessen and is thus significantly expanding sustainable electricity generation in our municipality," explains Ralph Bothe, Mayor of the municipality of Monsheim.

"We have been generating sustainable green electricity in our municipal wind farm since 2013 and also operate five photovoltaic systems on public buildings. It is great news that a system of this size has now been realized in our municipality," said the mayor.

The first construction phase of the new solar complex will deliver around 750 kWp of electrical power when it goes into operation and will therefore be able to feed around 769,500 kilowatt hours of environmentally friendly solar power into the electricity grid each year. This will save almost 462 tons of CO2 every year. In this first construction phase, the photovoltaic experts installed 2320 photovoltaic modules over an area of 3,800 square meters. The main component of the overall project is another large PV system with an output of 4.4 megawatt peak, for which Wirsol Roof Solutions was awarded the EEG feed-in tariff in a tender by the Federal Network Agency.

This second construction phase is scheduled for completion in 2021. Once completed, the plant with a total output of over five megawatt peak will cover the electricity needs of around 1,750 single-family homes.
