European transportation network
Amazon invests more than 1 billion euros in electrification
Amazon announced on 10 October that it will invest more than one billion euros in the further electrification and decarbonization of its own transport network in Europe over the next five years.
More than 400 million euros will be invested in Germany. The investments are intended to simultaneously drive innovation in the entire traffic and transportation sector and the expansion of the public charging infrastructure.
The company already deploys thousands of zero-emission vehicles in Europe. The new investments will add thousands more electric vehicles to the fleet and accelerate Amazon's progress to be net-zero carbon by 2040 - 10 years ahead of the Paris Climate Agreement.
"Decarbonizing our transportation network is one of the most challenging areas of our business. Achieving net-zero emissions here will require significant and sustained investment," says Andy Jassy, CEO of Amazon. "The deployment of thousands of electric delivery vans, long-haul trucks and bicycles will help move us further away from traditional fossil fuels. In doing so, we hope to encourage the transportation and automotive industries in Europe and around the world to continue to scale and innovate - because only by working together can we all achieve our climate goals."
Amazon's partners have more than 3,000 electric delivery vans delivering parcels to customers in Europe. With the investments announced today, the company aims to expand its fleet to more than 10,000 vehicles by 2025.
Amazon has already set up micro hubs in more than 20 European cities and expects this number to double by the end of 2025. Micro hubs are smaller, centrally located delivery stations in Europe's traditionally densely populated cities. These hubs enable Amazon to use new delivery methods such as e-cargo bikes and deliveries on foot to bring parcels to customers in a more sustainable way. The micro hubs will take conventional delivery vans off the road, reducing traffic congestion in city centers and improving air quality. In addition to the new delivery vans and micro hubs, Amazon will also invest in thousands of charging stations at its European locations - for itself and its partners.
