Toyota Industries Corporation receives A ratings for climate change and water security

Toyota Industries Corporation (TICO) is on the CDP's A-list for climate change for the third time in a row in 2020. The maximum rating was also achieved in the water security category. Many local initiatives by Toyota Material Handling Europe have also contributed to this, with which the European company of the Material Handling division supports the sixth environmental action plan of Toyota Industries.

"I am pleased to see that our colleagues in Japan attribute a large part of the global success in the CDP rating to the ambitious activities of the various European units," comments Tom Schalenbourg, Director Sustainability Development at Toyota Material Handling Europe. "It is extremely encouraging and motivating to work with colleagues who are determined to drive forward initiatives to protect the climate, despite the unprecedented challenge we currently face."

Toyota Material Handling Europe has set itself the goal of becoming CO2-neutral in its own operations by 2030. The company has committed to switching completely to 100% renewable energy in the 2021 financial year (April 1, 2020 to March 31, 2021). Toyota Material Handling's energy policy is based on three pillars:

- Net-zero emissions from own operations with milestones for CO2-neutral electricity by 2021 and ISO 50001 certification for all units by 2025;

- Recording emissions in supply chains and working with suppliers to develop low-carbon alternatives;

- Development of a complete portfolio of CO2-neutral products and solutions by 2030, with the aim that all products and solutions used by customers will be CO2-neutral by 2050.

In 2020, one measure of this energy policy was the commissioning of a photovoltaic system (photo), with an expected average production of 860,000 kWh of renewable energy, at the production site in Bologna, Italy.

"Before the solar panels were installed, we had already been using 100% renewable electricity since June 2016. With the current installation, which covers around a third of our electricity consumption, we are actively investing in increasing the supply of renewable energy in the Bologna region. This leads to a saving of 370 tons of CO2 per year," says Andrea Raviolo, Sustainability Senior Manager at Toyota Material Handling Manufacturing Italy.
