"Well prepared for peaks in demand"
Lehner Versand invests in automated warehouse from Swisslog
As a result of ongoing expansion, the Swiss mail order company has decided to technically optimize its logistics processes at the Schenkon (LU) site.
An AutoStore system was chosen to handle both the online and catalog business as well as the store business. Two storeys were added to an existing building and the robot system was installed directly under the roof.
Lehner Versand, the Swiss mail order company with over 39 years of tradition, has realized something special: At its headquarters in Schenkon/Sursee, Canton Lucerne, it has equipped the existing warehouse building with a new robot warehouse - and not just next door, but on top of it. As part of the "Skyscraper" expansion project, the business has grown by a fifth and sixth floor. The entire façade of the extension was fitted with solar panels. The project was managed by Lehner Versand and supported by external logistics consultant MWL.
Lehner Versand AG is one of the largest mail order companies in Switzerland. The company offers its customers an extensive range of bedding, bed linen, shoes, garden furniture, fashion, workwear, perfume and household appliances. The entire range of more than 50,000 different items is available in the online store. A large proportion of these can also be purchased in one of the 9 stores.
Fully automated technology has been installed on the top two newly built floors of the head office in Schenkon, where it is not directly accessible to customers, but can be viewed: an AutoStore system in which Lehner products are stored and can be picked immediately on demand in line with orders.
AutoStore has been an established automated system for small parts in warehouse logistics for many years and is widely used across all industries," explains Heinrich Lüthi, Managing Director of Swisslog Switzerland, the logistics company responsible for the project. Michael Hirschi, Head of Logistics at Lehner, emphasizes why the Aargau-based company was awarded the contract by the mail order company: "We had great confidence from the outset because Swisslog has successfully implemented the most AutoStore systems worldwide and is the clear leader for this type of logistics automation in Switzerland." Hirschi adds: "And so the planning and installation also went smoothly and quickly for us."
Lehner has initially ordered five picking stations. "However, there is always the option of adding seven more," says Lüthi from Swisslog, pointing out that the investment in the new technology is particularly future-proof. "Lehner is benefiting from the ongoing e-commerce boom and we are delighted to be able to support the growth of the Swiss mail order company with our technology. It is part of a far-sighted concept to plan buffers for further expansion." The capacity of the current system could also be expanded by using even more robots if required. "Thanks to these optional expansions, we are very flexible," says Michael Hirschi from Lehner, "if business fluctuates or we have to deal with peaks in demand, we are well prepared with our new dynamic logistics system."
