EPAL pallet production rises to record level in 2021

The European Pallet Association e.V. (EPAL) has continued the steady growth of the EPAL Euro pallet pool in 2021. For the first time, more than 100 million new EPAL Euro pallets were produced in one calendar year.

Record result of 101.3 million new EPAL Euro pallets

The record result of 101.3 million new EPAL Euro pallets corresponds to growth of 5.5% compared to the previous year (2020 production: 96.1 million EPAL Euro pallets). A significant increase of 7.6% was also recorded in the repair sector. Particularly noteworthy is the production of EPAL pallet cages, which grew by 66.7% to 288,149 pallet cages. The total volume of production and repair of all EPAL load carriers amounted to 130.8 million pallets in 2021 (+ 6%).

Robert Holliger, President of EPAL: "The year 2021 was characterized by major challenges. On the one hand, there was great demand for EPAL load carriers as a result of the economic upturn following the expected easing of the coronavirus pandemic. On the other hand, the shortage and significant increase in the price of wood made the situation very difficult for manufacturers and repairers of EPAL Euro pallets. This makes us all the more proud that the production of EPAL Euro pallets has increased once again despite the shortage of wood. We would like to thank the EPAL licensees and the users of EPAL Euro pallets for this excellent result."

Ensuring the supply chains of industry and trade

In the wake of the shortage and price increase of wood in spring 2021, there were occasional fears that users from industry and trade would not be supplied with sufficient numbers of EPAL Euro pallets, but in retrospect this did not prove to be the case. The EPAL Euro pallet pool proved to be a reliable partner for industry and trade and their supply chains again in 2021, guaranteeing the availability of EPAL Euro pallets at all times.

Bernd Dörre, CEO of EPAL: "The great confidence of users in the open EPAL Euro pallet pool is also proof of the importance of EPAL Euro pallets in international goods logistics. In addition to ensuring the efficiency and safety of logistics processes, the use of EPAL Euro pallets also helps users to achieve their sustainability goals. The reuse of EPAL Euro pallets protects wood resources and reducesCO2 emissions from production and transportation. The EPAL Euro pallet pool is a prime example of a sustainable circular economy. It is therefore not surprising that the number of participants in the open pallet exchange is growing steadily and that this has led to the record result in the production of EPAL Euro pallets."

Whether the record result can be repeated in 2022 is currently difficult to estimate given the considerable impact of the war in Ukraine. However, the growth in the production of EPAL Euro pallets continued in the first quarter of 2022. The security of supply of EPAL Euro pallets is therefore still guaranteed.
