123.5 million load carriers for a hallelujah
EPAL pallet production increases despite Covid-19 pandemic
Following the growth of previous years, the European Pallet Association e.V. (EPAL) also recorded an increase in the production of EPAL pallets in 2020. Despite the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic and the rise in timber prices, the production of EPAL pallets grew by 1.14% to 97.3 million pallets in 2020 (2019: 96.2 million).
The reporting figures for the repair of EPAL pallets declined slightly. Overall, however, the production and repair of EPAL pallets increased by 0.5% to 123.5 million pallets (2019: 123 million pallets). "This positive development is particularly noteworthy in view of the global economic slump caused by the Covid-19 pandemic," explains Robert Holliger, President of EPAL. "The disruption to national and international supply chains was an unprecedented challenge for the manufacturers and users of EPAL Euro pallets, which was successfully overcome together."
The production and repair of EPAL pallets has been classified as systemically relevant by many European countries because pallet logistics and, in particular, the open EPAL Euro pallet exchange pool are essential for the transportation of goods. To maintain the supply of food and other consumer goods to consumers and to secure the supply chains of trade and industry, EPAL's licensees were and are able to deliver at all times, even during the lockdown.
"It is a particular vote of confidence for us that large parts of the transportation of Covid-19 vaccines are carried out on EPAL Euro pallets. EPAL Euro pallets meet the highest requirements for the safety and reliability of load carriers, especially in extreme cold conditions such as the transportation of vaccines," says Robert Holliger.
