Lufthansa Cargo accelerates fleet modernization
Lufthansa Cargo will significantly accelerate the modernization of its fleet by purchasing two additional brand-new Boeing 777F freighters. The Lufthansa Group and the Supervisory Board have approved the corresponding investments.
The aircraft will be delivered by the manufacturer in 2020 and stationed in Frankfurt. In return, the ten older MD-11 freighters, some of which have already been replaced by Boeing 777Fs this year, are expected to be taken out of service by the end of 2020.
"We are investing in maximum reliability and significantly lower emissions," said Peter Gerber, CEO of Lufthansa Cargo. "The modernization of our fleet is the biggest contribution we can make to the future in the short term. We combine responsibility for our company with corporate responsibility," Gerber continued.
Same cargo performance with fewer flight movements
Thanks to the higher cargo capacity and range, the same cargo performance can be achieved with noticeably fewer flight movements in future. In total, Lufthansa Cargo customers will have the same freighter capacity at their disposal at the end of the roll-over as at the beginning, when eighteen MD-11Fs were in operation. In addition to its own fleet, Lufthansa Cargo can also draw on the freight capacity of four Boeing 777Fs operated by AeroLogic.
In addition to its own fleet, Lufthansa Cargo also markets the belly capacities of Deutsche Lufthansa, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, Eurowings and SunExpress. Overall, around half of the cargo is transported in the cargo holds of passenger aircraft.
