The collaboration between MiR and Guardian Industries, a subsidiary of Koch Industries, began in 2020, when Guardian Industries tested different variants to automate in-plant transportation and optimize internal workflows. Led by the Manufacturing Transformation team, MiR robots were implemented in a pilot project at two locations in the United States. Koch Industries then began evaluating the use of MiR technology at its other international sites.

"We entered into this strategic agreement with MiR because they have the capacity and extensive knowledge to help us optimize our logistics operations," says Antonio Blanco, Global Category Manager at Guardian Industries. "MiR offers flexible automation solutions that we can tailor to our current and future operational requirements. We are implementing this technology at multiple locations because we view MiR as a long-term partner with the experience and capabilities to help us achieve our productivity goals."

Five different models
With five different models, MiR has a wide range of autonomous mobile robots. These can take on various transport tasks and lift and move both smaller parts and heavy loads of up to one ton. The AMRs can also pick up, transport and deliver pallets. Depending on customer requirements, MiR's robots can be adapted to individual needs with various modules.

"Almost every MiR pilot project so far has resulted in the customer subsequently ordering more autonomous mobile robots from MiR. Since the cost-effective racking and handling accessories have been added, customers continue to find new applications for MiR's AMR. They also appreciate the ease of installation of the navigation, fleet and operation software, which also provides a continuous ROI," explains Frank Tobe, robotics and industrial analyst at FLT Consulting. "MiR focuses on horizontal transportation applications for which AMR technology is ideally suited for almost all manufacturing and logistics operations worldwide. I can understand why Koch and other innovative multinationals are interested in MiR: The products fit the demand perfectly."

Company-wide deployment planned
Guardian Industries plans to use the AMR throughout the company: "We will be using the robots in several plants with different requirements and products. It is therefore important for us that the logistics solution can be used in any environment and can be easily adapted for new tasks; this is exactly what MiR offers," adds Material Handling Engineering Manager Peter Westrick.
