An O instead of a U: saving space in flow production

Production cells are traditionally designed in a U-shape, with workers being supplied by a supermarket close to production via numerous supply interfaces. The Landshut-based lean manufacturing experts at NeoLog have now turned the tables and presented the O-cell: a 360-degree production cell with an integrated supermarket for fully automated production supply. This patented solution was developed in collaboration with the "Puls" technology center at Landshut University of Applied Sciences and is now being planned by NeoLog on a customer-specific basis.

In the course of digitalization, the course has long since been set for artificial intelligence in intralogistics, as robotics promotes value creation. Christian Schulz, Managing Partner of NeoLog, explains: "Until now, solutions have been geared towards human skills. We have deliberately broken with some lean rules and have now positioned workers around a central operating robot." An innovation that manages with just a single supply interface and transfers the needs-based material supply to AI: "The station comes to the worker - no longer the other way around," summarizes Schulz. "Every neological service oasis is geared towards people, and so is the O-cell."

Saving space, increasing efficiency and protecting health
As a supermarket close to production is no longer necessary, space can be saved: According to the company, a simulation by the Puls Technology Center resulted in a 49% saving. The O-cell also contributes to process efficiency, as a fully automated material supply system takes over time-consuming picking and packing processes. Thanks to robotics, workers can concentrate more on their core area of production: "The robot can use otherwise unused areas under or above the work table as a supermarket. People work with maximum ergonomics and employee satisfaction increases," says Schulz.

License holder NeoLog offers the O-cell across all industries, "usually based on a Lepo consultation," explains Schulz. With the Lepo consulting product, NeoLog supports companies along the entire intralogistics value chain. The O-cell is therefore "a real milestone" if you define lean manufacturing as automation from the warehouse to the assembly workstation, among other things.
