Warehouse planning in a Star Trek atmosphere

The Ehrhardt + Partner Group opened the first virtual reality (VR) CAVE system for logistics warehouse planning. An innovative meeting room creates a virtual environment as the centerpiece using projection and modern software technology.

For example, the system enables twelve people to take a computer-simulated 360° tour of a virtual warehouse - without the use of VR glasses. This makes logistics processes clearer and easier to understand. The holodeck is intended to increase planning and investment security in warehouse planning. Warehouse infrastructure and processes can be depicted realistically in the holodeck.

"By using the holodeck, we are reaching a new level of development in logistics planning and consulting," said Marco Ehrhardt, Managing Partner of EPG, at the opening of the holodeck at EPG's headquarters in Boppard-Buchholz. "We can use it to visualize logistics processes realistically as early as the planning phase. Users communicate directly in virtual reality and various planning scenarios can be run through live in the holodeck." With the help of visualization software, the CAD plans, construction plans or floor plans of a warehouse are projected onto the meeting table, while a 3D-modelled warehouse is built up element by element on the surrounding walls. The conceivable applications for the system extend beyond logistics. For example, the technology could also be used for organizing presentation appointments.
