New specifications increase safety for users

The focus here is clearly on maximum safety for users. When the previous version of the EN 131 standard expires on December 31, the tests that manufacturers must subject a ladder to before it is launched on the market will be tightened. In future, the strength of a ladder will no longer be tested in the horizontal position as before, but in the upright position. In addition, there will be new tests such as the durability test for stepladders or the slip resistance test on the ground. The prescribed test loads for the stability test will also be increased. Another significant change to the standard for both manufacturers and users concerns the design and dimensional specifications. Probably the most comprehensive change: from January 2018, all new single ladders from a length of three meters must have a stand extension as standard, for example in the form of a traverse. Volker Jarosch, responsible for product development at Hymer-Leichtmetallbau, gives specific examples: "In future, single ladders such as our 4011 and 6011 models will be equipped with crossbars from a number of twelve rungs upwards. This is where we use solutions such as our straight SC40 and curved SC60 crossbars."

Following the reform of the EN 131 standard, Hymer-Leichtmetallbau will in future be equipping single ladders such as the 4011 model from the professional series with crossbars from a minimum of twelve rungs.

"The changes will help to significantly increase the stability of ladders and therefore the safety of users once again," emphasizes Volker Jarosch. With regard to the question of what will happen to ladders that no longer comply with the standard once the transition period has expired, the access technology expert is reassuring: "As a manufacturer, we will no longer be allowed to produce ladders in accordance with the old standard from January 1, 2018. However, existing stock may continue to be used and can still be purchased from retailers. However, as the widening of the base provides additional safety, we generally recommend that users check whether it is sensible and possible to retrofit existing ladders accordingly."
