MHS automates GLS's new international hub
The system integrator Material Handling Systems (MHS) is automating the new international sorting center of General Logistics Systems B.V. (GLS) in Sordio, Italy. MHS is installing a system consisting of three main sorting systems for the parcel and express service provider. Two HC loop cross-belt sorters handle the processing of normal and small parcels, while an automated linear system sorts irregular consignments regardless of their shape, size or surface characteristics. In total, the combined solution achieves a throughput of up to 22,500 consignments per hour. MHS will support GLS throughout the entire project, from system planning, manufacture, installation and commissioning in the summer through to customer service.
"The project underpins our objective of being the partner of choice for integrated automation projects. We act as a one-stop store for parcel service providers and offer first-class solutions," says Markus Augeneder, CEO of MHS International. The new international GLS hub is strategically located near Milan and will provide efficient and high-quality services to companies involved in the cross-border movement of goods. In addition to the new sorting center, additional offices and outbuildings as well as a green area of over 4,000 square meters will be built on an area of over 12,000 square meters.
In order to optimize the courier service's parcel handling, MHS is working closely with GLS throughout the project. In this context, the solution will be fully integrated into the existing operational processes and is intended to increase both efficiency and occupational safety. "The system processes parcels of all kinds and ensures an efficient and precise material flow," says Augeneder. In light of the ongoing upward trend in the e-commerce market, the solution also offers a wide range of expansion and customization options, ensuring that the parcel service provider is future-proof. Klaus Schädle, Group Area Managing Director GLS, emphasizes: "The new hub represents an important stage in our general growth and business strategy and is intended to serve the increasing volume of international deliveries. In view of this, we have invested heavily in recent years in order to continue to offer our customers a comprehensive, efficient and high-quality service."
