Virtual Reality
DB Schenker trains logistics staff with 3D technology and VR glasses
Together with research experts, DB Schenker has developed an innovative employee training program. Packaging and picking processes can be learned in advance in a virtual reality version.
Together with the Fraunhofer Institute for Material Flow and Logistics, DB Schenker has developed a new employee training course in the joint Enterprise Lab for Logistics and Digitalization. In future, logistics staff will be able to practise various packaging and order picking processes in six exercises in German and English. The use of VR glasses will make the transition from the virtual environment to reality much easier for employees - training efficiency, quality and speed are expected to increase significantly as a result. In addition, logistics processes that are in the implementation phase can be extensively tested in advance.
First training session in Leipzig
The training has recently been used in real-time operation at the DB Schenker site in Leipzig, and there are plans to expand it. "We have been working successfully with the Fraunhofer Institute for several years and have already jointly developed numerous transport and logistics solutions for the future. The innovative employee training is another milestone in the digitalization of logistics processes and the Logistics 4.0 orientation of DB Schenker," says Erik Wirsing, Vice President Global Innovation Schenker AG.
Dr. Michael Schmidt, responsible for intralogistics and IT planning at the Fraunhofer Institute for Material Flow and Logistics (IML), is delighted with the excellent feedback from the trainers and trainees on site: "We were only able to develop this innovative and motivating learning solution by combining research and development with the expertise of the site and the Process and Efficiency Management department."
