"Increase throughput and availability"

Hubertus Dieckmann, Managing Director at Fortna / Pierau on the right strategy for warehouse modernizations.

material flow: Where and with what do you start when it comes to the idea of modernization? What advice do you have for the logistics managers among our readers?

Hubertus Dieckmann: If logistics processes no longer run smoothly in day-to-day operations and, for example, frequent malfunctions in an automated system lead to low availability, this significantly reduces the overall performance of the system. To ensure the highest possible efficiency and reliability in the processes, replacing the performance-inhibiting components with modern technology can be an economical alternative to a completely new implementation. This first requires an analysis to identify the areas of the process chain where an increased number of faults and failures occur and what impact they have. Experts should then examine the extent to which modernization options exist and what potential they have. By implementing these measures - which can affect both the mechanics and the control technology of systems - throughput and availability can be increased.

mfl: Which of your company's products or services is the first thing that comes to mind when you think of modernization?

Dieckmann: Thanks to the experience gained from a large number of successfully completed retrofit projects, we have developed a feel for optimization potential, its cost-effectiveness and the possibilities for its implementation. We determine these on the basis of analyses of the critical, modernization-relevant components. We are also a competent partner (based on customer requirements) for identifying and coordinating the specialist companies involved in the implementation of modernization measures.
