all-electric hooklift
First Volvo FE Electric for Munich
The Volvo FE Electric is the first fully electric series vehicle to be handed over in the city of Munich. It is intended to help improve air purity and reduce traffic noise. The Volvo FE Electric with roll-off tipper for Abfallwirtschaftsbetrieb München (AWM) is the first fully electric truck in Bavaria to support waste disposal and the first of its kind in the whole of Germany.
The municipal waste disposal company AWM uses the all-electric Volvo FE Electric roll-off tipper in the city area for container logistics at the recycling centers. Thanks to its flexible body, the e-truck can pick up different containers as required. For this special application, the vehicle has a range of approx. 120 kilometers. This means that the 27-ton truck can travel safely and independently throughout the entire area of the state capital of Munich. Four lithium-ion batteries, each with 50 kWh, provide the necessary energy. The e-truck can be charged in different ways. Either via an AC charging process with up to 22 kW or, if it has to be done quickly, in a DC charging process with up to 150 kW. The battery is then fully charged again in around one hour.
"In 2012, we put a comparable vehicle with a roll-off tipper and diesel hybrid technology from Volvo Trucks into operation. We have had very good experience with this. Taking the next step with this all-electric truck is the logical next step, also because the cooperation with Volvo Trucks has been excellent," says Reinhold Bauer, Fleet Manager at AWM.
The Volvo FE Electric model series also improves the working environment for drivers thanks to the low noise level and vibration-free drive. The electric trucks can be charged either from the mains or at fast charging stations. The battery capacity of Volvo's series e-trucks can be adjusted as required. Ranges of up to 300 kilometers are possible.
"With our electrically powered trucks, we want to support our customers in their transportation tasks and their ambitious sustainability goals. We are clearly pursuing the goal of paving the way to a sustainable future for our industry," says Manfred Nelles, press spokesman for Volvo Trucks.
The new arrival at AWM also impresses with state-of-the-art disposal technology. The body is the RL 18 roll-off tipper from Meiller. Thanks to the electrification of the E-Volvo, the power take-off can now be controlled and used as required. This means that it only runs when it is actually needed. The body is controlled with the new Meiller i.s.a.r.-control 3 radio remote control. This allows drivers to operate the hooklift from a safe distance with a much better overview. Thanks to the all-electric drive, the body is now also considerably quieter, as the hydraulic pump only runs when the hooklift is actually in operation. The resulting energy savings in turn increase the truck's range.
