Electric over the last mile
eSprinter pilot vehicles and first eVito in series production go to Hermes
On the occasion of the opening of the Hermes logistics center in Hamburg, the first 20 eVito series production vehicles and the first eight eSprinter pilot vehicles from Mercedes-Benz Vans were handed over to Hermes Germany.
The eVito will supplement the pilot vehicles already available in the cities of Stuttgart and Hamburg for last-mile deliveries in urban areas. A strategic partnership with Hermes for electric delivery in the two cities with eVito pilot vehicles has been running since 2018. "Electromobility plays a central role in our 'Urban Blue' mobility concept: in order to continue to drive forward our long-term climate and environmental protection strategy, we are consistently pursuing the sustainable renewal of our vehicle fleet. The partnership with Mercedes-Benz and the associated deployment of 1,500 electric vans is another milestone in this process. We are particularly pleased to have had Mercedes-Benz at our side as a renowned cooperation partner since 1972," emphasizes Olaf Schabirosky, CEO of Hermes Germany.
Cooperation at different levels
The collaboration goes far beyond the mere operation of the e-vehicles. For example, the partners are working on a joint concept for an efficient charging infrastructure in Hermes' logistics centers, as well as the development of IT services for the optimal management of the electric fleet and its integration into daily operations. "Vehicles that are optimally adapted to their intended use are the prerequisite for efficient operation - especially in the challenging field of urban logistics. In view of the changing requirements of customers and cities, simply having cargo space on wheels is no longer enough. Instead, we need low-emission and emission-free drives as well as intelligent solutions that go beyond the vehicle itself, for example in the area of efficient charging infrastructure," explains Klaus Maier, Head of Sales and Marketing at Mercedes-Benz Vans.
