Kardex Mlog celebrates topping-out ceremony at Germany's highest deep-freeze warehouse

Just nine months after the ground-breaking ceremony, catering specialist apetito and Kardex Mlog celebrated the topping-out ceremony for the construction of the new deep-freeze high-bay warehouse in Rheine. As the tallest and one of the largest of its kind in Germany, the warehouse will provide space for around 13 million frozen meals, which will be temporarily stored there at minus 24 degrees Celsius - enough for up to 1,600 customer orders a day - in over 17,000 pallet spaces when it opens in summer 2017.

As general contractor, Kardex Mlog is building a 43-metre high and 75-metre long four-aisle high-bay warehouse in Rheine with state-of-the-art automation technology that allows almost 4,000 pallet movements per day. Among other things, this is made possible by storage and retrieval machines with double-deep load handling, two load handling devices each, fully automatic mixed pallet formation and the conveyor connection to the warehouse.

Deep-freeze high-bay warehouses place particularly high demands on technology, materials and energy efficiency. Kardex Mlog is one of the most prominent suppliers in this demanding segment with special components from its own production. The storage and retrieval machines, which were installed shortly before the topping-out ceremony, not only feature proven, cold-resistant technology, but also state-of-the-art systems for efficient energy use and recovery.

"Sustainability and performance were equally high on the list of requirements," says Ludger Sasse, apetito project manager, "Kardex Mlog was able to combine both aspects in one concept in collaboration with the Metroplan planning office."
