Position in the USA expanded
Norfolk Southern relies on Informs yard and crane management
Optimization specialist Inform has been selected to implement its yard management and crane movement optimization solutions at Norfolk Southern's Rossville and Austell terminals.
Inform will integrate its two add-on modules Yard Optimizer and Crane Optimizer into Norfolk Southern's Terminal Operating System (TOS). In addition, the so-called "Optimization Plus" configuration is planned, in which several modules from the Aachen-based software company's specially developed Intermodal TOS will be provided to improve the stacking processes at both locations. The Syncrotess optimization system uses both artificial intelligence methods and Inform's more than 50 years of experience in mathematical optimization.
"We are continuing to expand our presence in the USA, thereby supporting our customers worldwide in their innovation process, as demonstrated by our collaboration with the innovative rail operator Norfolk Southern," says Dr. Eva Savelsberg, Head of Logistics at Inform. The software will be delivered to Norfolk Southern's two terminals in Rossville, Tennessee, and Austell, Georgia. Both terminals have individual container storage configurations and different crane systems, so standard solutions are not an option. Instead, "Optimization Plus" will be configured individually for both locations so that each site can achieve its own operational and optimization goals.
Our solutions for optimizing stacking processes and crane movements in intermodal transport have been used successfully in Germany for over two decades," adds Savelsberg. "We are delighted to now be able to introduce them to the North American market."
The Yard Optimizer assigns each loading unit an optimized storage location in the warehouse in real time. The configurable add-on module works with modern algorithms based on AI and Operations Research (OR). It supports operations teams in reducing the number of unproductive container movements during peak hours and proactively suggests shifting such movements to off-peak times. The Crane Optimizer dynamically assigns all work orders to the respective cranes Each available crane working in the container yard receives them via an in-cab hardware device specifically designed to simplify crane operators' workflows, reduce stress and ensure that the optimized results of the Yard Optimizer are efficiently implemented.
