Container traffic between the Czech Republic and the Port of Hamburg develops positively

In terms of transport geography, the Czech Republic is located in the center of Europe and is one of the fastest growing economic markets within the EU. Due to its short distance to the Czech Republic, the Port of Hamburg offers transport options for handling Czech import and export goods.

Every year, around three million tons of goods are transported to and from the Czech Republic via the Port of Hamburg. "The Czech Republic is one of the most important markets in Central Europe for the Port of Hamburg, and we are delighted that the Port of Hamburg is the gateway to the world for the Czech economy. This is also illustrated by the growth in container traffic, which reached an increase of around 8.6 percent last year and is also developing positively this year," said Vladimir Dobos, Head of the Port of Hamburg Marketing Representative Office in Prague. More than 480,000 containers were transported between the Port of Hamburg and the Czech container terminals in 2018.

In his welcome address to the more than 250 guests, Ingo Egloff, CEO of Port of Hamburg Marketing e.V. (HHM), emphasized that more than 90 percent of import and export containers to and from Hamburg are transported by rail in an environmentally friendly way. "The 120 weekly container train connections between transhipment terminals in the Czech Republic, Slovakia and the container terminals in the Port of Hamburg, which are offered to many loading points by the operator METRANS in particular, illustrate the performance of our seaport hinterland traffic. The Port of Hamburg has established itself as the leading seaport in the Czech market. Shippers in the Czech Republic and Slovakia benefit from the high number of train connections and the reliability of the services. We are very pleased that container traffic by rail in particular is ensuring further growth," said Ingo Egloff.
In addition to goods destined for the Czech market, transit goods are also forwarded via the Czech Republic to Slovakia, Austria and Hungary.

On the occasion of the annual Port Evening, the Port of Hamburg Representative Office invited representatives from business, associations, organizations and HHM members to the beautiful premises of the Municipal House in Prague. The representative office, which has been active in Prague for 29 years, hosted the traditional event and, with its diverse activities in the market, ensures that contacts with the business community in the Czech Republic and Slovakia are purposefully expanded and well maintained. The information and networking events as well as trade fair and conference participations organized by HHM offer clear advantages to HHM members active in these markets.
