Tackling challenges
The year 2024 is almost over and was characterized by drastic economic and political events. Most recently, the break-up of the German government's traffic light coalition and the results of the US elections at the beginning of November made headlines. It is doubtful whether this will lead to calmer waters both politically and economically.
From an economic perspective, Germany will continue to face major challenges in 2025: In their economic forecast for the coming year, the "Wise Men" predict very low growth of 0.4 percent. According to all indications, Germany will therefore continue to lag behind other advanced economies.
"Addressing shortcomings, modernizing with determination" - this is the title of the annual report by the German Council of Economic Experts (SVR), which proposes a variety of measures to restart the weakening economic engine. "The weakness of industry and the duration of the weak phase suggest that the German economy is being held back by structural problems as well as cyclical ones," explains Monika Schnitzer, Chairwoman of the German Council of Economic Experts. "In Germany, there have been failures in politics and the economy in recent years and decades. It is therefore all the more important that we now resolutely press ahead with the modernization of our country."
