Nauticors "Kairos"

Martin Schrüfer,

World's largest bunker ship christened

The official christening of the world's largest LNG bunker vessel "Kairos" took place in the Port of Hamburg on February 8. The festive ceremony took place in the presence of more than 250 guests at the Steinwerder cruise terminal. Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer, Federal Chairwoman of the CDU, christened the ship with the traditional blessing "I christen you with the name "Kairos" and wish you and your crew a safe voyage at all times and always a hand's breadth of water under your keel".

Mahinde Abeynaike, Managing Director of Nauticor, emphasized the significance of this important milestone: "The christening of the "Kairos" here in Hamburg is the result of several years of work by our team at Nauticor together with our partners. With the commissioning of the world's largest LNG bunker vessel, the availability of LNG as a fuel for large-scale shipping has been secured, especially in the Baltic Sea. Now that shipping companies have access to a fuel alternative that is not only financially attractive but also environmentally sustainable, both people and nature in north-western Europe will benefit from a significant reduction in emissions at sea and in port."

Kramp-Karrenbauer agreed and emphasized the importance of this project: "The commissioning of the world's largest LNG bunker vessel is not only a special moment for German shipping, but also a response to environmental concerns and a solution for the global effort to make the transport of goods and people by sea more sustainable."

Chartered by Blue LNG, a joint venture between the Hamburg-based leading LNG supplier Nauticor (90% share) and the Lithuanian state energy infrastructure operator KN (10% share), the ship is owned by Babcock Schulte Energy. With an LNG tank capacity of 7,500 m³, the "Kairos" is the world's largest LNG bunker vessel. In addition to ice class 1A, the ship is equipped with other special features, including a ballast-free design and a CNG tank for storing boil-off gas. Construction and planning of the ship began in 2016 and the first steel cut took place at Hyundai Mipo Dockyard (HMD) in Ulsan, South Korea, in February 2018. The ship was delivered in South Korea in October 2018.
