Third car rack for Kia Germany put into operation

As a result, the location in the international automotive logistics network of the BLG Group, headquartered in Bremen, has continued to grow. The "P3" ensures an even more efficient use of space and has been built according to the latest construction standards. A photovoltaic system is planned for the roof - already the second on the site. Such a system has been installed on another of the terminal's hall roofs since 2019. It produces 43,000 kWh of electricity, of which the site uses 85% for its own needs. Kelheim also treats water: The water is recycled, so that only 20 percent fresh water is required for all work at the terminal.

With a length of 155 meters, a width of 84 meters and a height of 23 meters, the new, third car rack, which was built exclusively for the customer Kia Germany, is the largest at the Kelheim terminal. It offers covered parking space for 5,368 vehicles on eight levels. This increases the number of covered spaces on the terminal site to a total of 13,000. BLG Logistics hopes that new car customers in particular will appreciate this protected storage of vehicles.

Time and costs on schedule

The new "P3" car rack was built by the Regensburg branch of Goldbeck Ost GmbH. The project was completed on time and on budget despite the pandemic. The investment volume for the new car rack was around 24 million euros.

As part of the capacity expansion, the BLG Group has also signed a long-term contract for further cooperation with Kia Germany. Since the opening of the Kia plant in Zilina, Slovakia, in 2006, the BLG site near Regensburg has been working for the South Korean car manufacturer. The new vehicles for the German market reach the Kelheim terminal by rail, after which the vehicles are technically prepared, including special installations and storage. BLG AutoTransport GmbH & Co KG, which has its own base at the terminal, distributes the vehicles to dealers.

Founded in 1995, the BLG AutoTerminal Kelheim is a major location in the BLG Group's international automotive logistics network - for the consolidation of vehicles and subsequent dealer distribution to the German market and the Benelux countries. In Kelheim, the vehicles usually arrive by barge from Hungary, by truck from the automotive plants in southern Germany or by rail from Slovakia and the Czech Republic. The vehicles are temporarily stored at the terminal and distributed from there to dealers throughout Germany.

On an area of 547,000 square meters and in two car racks built in 2007 and 2009, 27,000 cars have been stored at the terminal so far. With the third new car rack built in 2021, there are now 32,000 parking spaces. In addition to terminal handling and vehicle storage, the service portfolio also includes technical services such as vehicle preparation, washing, underbody protection, painting and special installations. The terminal has two rail connections and berths for barges.
