Rhenus takes over BLG's forwarding locations in Germany

The BLG Logistics Group has decided to concentrate strategically on national and international business in the Contract, Automobile and Container divisions in future. Rhenus Air & Ocean is strengthening its presence in Germany with the planned takeover of the forwarding business of the logistics company BLG International Forwarding GmbH & Co KG. The acquisition will enable Rhenus to open up new business areas and make its global network available to the BLG Group. Subject to approval by the antitrust authorities, Rhenus will acquire nine air and sea freight locations on April 1, 2021.

BLG International Forwarding's nine forwarding sites with around 100 employees are to be integrated into Rhenus Air & Ocean's existing network in Germany, which currently comprises twelve branches, from the beginning of April. These include sites in Hamburg and Bremerhaven, Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, Stuttgart and Munich. This will enable more volumes to be handled via the LCL gateway in Hilden and the air freight hub in Frankfurt in future.

"We have gained a strong partner in Rhenus Air & Ocean, which provides our customers with an extensive network thanks to its global presence," says Jens Wollesen, Board Member for Contract at BLG Logistics. "By selling our freight forwarding business, BLG is adapting strategically to changing market conditions. Even though we will no longer have a nationwide forwarding presence in Germany, we will continue to offer comprehensive international services in the contract, automotive and container sectors."

"In recent years, we have set the course for the continuous expansion of our air and sea freight activities. By adding new locations, employees and business activities, we are consolidating our Air & Ocean network in Germany. We also want to develop new business areas such as transporting foodstuffs using reefer business and activities in the field of trade fair and event logistics," says Stefan Schwind, Managing Director of Rhenus Air & Ocean Deutschland.

The takeover does not include BLG's forwarding location in Bremen, which focuses on land transportation, heavy goods transportation, project business and sea freight.
