Package of measures implemented to reduce energy and operating costs
BLG Sports & Fashion Logistics GmbH and Siemens Building Technologies AG have jointly implemented a comprehensive package of measures to reduce energy and operating costs. In technical jargon, this is known as energy-saving contracting and includes the use of modern lighting, ventilation systems and much more.

Sustainability is a high priority for BLG Logistics. It is also the basis for the company's claim to comprehensive high quality, which includes social and societal responsibility, environmental and climate protection as well as future-oriented management. There are intensive interactions between logistics and the environment. Logistics benefits greatly from internationally interlinked goods and value chains, which in turn are closely linked to our prosperity and economic growth. At the same time, the necessary transportation activities and logistics processes cause significant amounts of greenhouse gas emissions, which are responsible for climate change and global warming. All logistics companies therefore have a responsibility to take measures to protect the environment and natural resources. BLG Logistics is also committed to making its contribution to greater energy efficiency, resource conservation and global emissions reduction.
Sustainable commitment
BLG Sports & Fashion Logistics GmbH, based in Hörsel, Thuringia, which operates an omnichannel fulfillment center for textile customers and offers comprehensive textile logistics services, concluded a comprehensive energy-saving contracting agreement with Siemens Building Technologies AG in mid-2015. The aim is to sustainably reduce the energy and operating costs of the 160,000 square meter BLG Sports & Fashion Logistics hall complexes and to renew the buildings' technical systems. In total, an energy saving potential of around 38 percent per year can be realized. In addition, the environment will be relieved by reducing CO2 emissions by a total of 33 percent. The working conditions for employees have also improved noticeably thanks to state-of-the-art lighting, air conditioning and ventilation.
Light and air package of measures
As part of the package of measures agreed by BLG and Siemens, 8,000 fluorescent tubes in the interior and exterior areas of the Thuringian logistics center were replaced with modern LED lighting systems, resulting in a 20 percent reduction in the number of light sources. In addition to improving the quality of light to daylight levels and increasing the service life of the light sources, this measure also serves to reduce maintenance costs.
Secondly, all hall fans were replaced by direct-driven supply and exhaust air systems with highly efficient drives. This innovation means that the previous belt drives are no longer required. As a result, there is no abrasion and filter contamination from fine dust is reduced. The new fans also guarantee higher availability with lower power consumption and lower maintenance costs. The new ventilation systems effectively extract steam that is generated when ironing textiles in the logistics center, for example. At the same time, fresh and cool air is fed into the halls via additional ducts, which leads to a significant improvement in working conditions.

In addition to replacing the hall fans, BLG also commissioned Siemens to renew the ventilation systems in the administration, changing areas and canteen. By using a larger cross-flow heat exchanger and an integrated cooling system, it was possible to improve comfort by providing cooling options for the administration, while at the same time increasing system availability, reducing power consumption and lowering maintenance costs.
Less steam
But that's not all. As a further measure in line with a sustainable corporate policy, BLG and Siemens have agreed to replace the existing tunnel finishers in the logistics center with newer models. This measure has reduced steam consumption by 50 percent and lowered electricity consumption accordingly. In addition, the use of a new steam meter now makes it possible to optimize steam generation. The new finishers have also increased the throughput of goods.
Logistics since 1877
BLG Logistics Group AG & Co KG has its core competencies in automobile, contract and container logistics. In these three business areas, the Group offers fully integrated logistics system services. Its customers include German car manufacturers as well as leading companies from the retail sector. The roots of the group of companies go back to 1877. Today, BLG Logistics is a growing company that has developed into a global logistics provider with activities at over 100 locations in Europe, North and South America, Africa and Asia. Including all its holdings, the group of companies currently provides around 16,000 jobs worldwide.
In addition to these improvement measures, BLG Sports & Fashion Logistics will soon have a combined heat and power plant installed at its site in Hörsel, which will generate heat and electricity at the same time and thus reduce the amount of electricity purchased from the energy supplier. The logistics company has also arranged for a building management system to be connected, which includes a measuring and metering concept. This creates a clear and uniform metering structure and increases the transparency of energy consumption.
Overall, the energy-saving contracting of BLG and Siemens with its diverse improvements represents the most extensive modernization measure in the company history of BLG Sports & Fashion. The investment takes account of sustainable corporate management. "We are aware of our responsibility as a logistics company towards the environment. We have therefore decided to make the Hörsel site energy-efficient. The innovations are an investment in the future of the site," says Markus Buckow, Managing Director of BLG Sports & Fashion GmbH & Co KG.
