Climate-neutral transportation
Alpensped launches 50/50 climate initiative
Alpensped is launching the 50/50 climate initiative in September: from then on, customers will have the opportunity to have their transports carried out in a climate-neutral manner. The logistics provider will cover 50 percent of the compensation costs.
Certified in accordance with ISO 14064 (CCF = corporate carbon footprint) and DIN EN 16258 (TCF = transport-related footprint), the medium-sized company's administration has been climate-neutral since 2011 and has been offsetting part of its transport services through carbon offset projects run by the non-profit organization myclimate since 2015. In 2019, Alpensped increased its offsetting performance to 10 percent. With the climate initiative now being launched, the family-run company is going one step further and also involving customers in its commitment to climate protection.
"The effects of climate change are now being felt worldwide," says Managing Director Christian Faggin (pictured). It is therefore more urgent than ever to develop ways, means and strategies to protect the environment. This concerns everyone and everyone must make their contribution. "As a logistics service provider, we see a special responsibility here. That's why we developed the 50/50 initiative," says Faggin.
This gives customers the opportunity to have their goods transported climate-neutrally by Alpensped - whether as partial or full loads or as special and heavy goods transport. Alpensped offsets the resulting CO2 emissions via the certified Gold Standard quality project "Less deforestation of the rainforest thanks to efficient stoves in Kenya". And shares the offsetting costs with its customers. "For me, this is an investment in the future," says Christian Faggin. "In this way, we are helping to ensure that future generations can also live happily and operate successfully in an intact environment."
Working completely climate-neutral by 2025
In addition to the costs, the effort for Alpensped customers is also kept within limits. This is because the total amount of the compensation is already shown in the offer. A correct final settlement of the transport order with the actual CO2 emissions caused is then made with the invoice. The pilot project with Matsen Chemie AG has confirmed how well this model works. Alpensped offset all the transports it carried out for the Hamburg-based chemical company in 2019. That was a total of 43 tons of CO2. "We hope that many customers will follow Matsen Chemie AG's example. After all, our major goal is to be completely climate-neutral by 2025," emphasizes Faggin. In order to achieve this goal, the logistics service provider is focusing not only on offsetting but also increasingly on reduction. For example, Alpensped is using state-of-the-art vehicles and the first gas-powered trucks are currently being tested. In addition, the shift in transportation from road to rail is being driven forward. "This is already working satisfactorily on the Ludwigshafen - Verona route, but we want and need to achieve even more here too," concludes Faggin.
