On trend: economical hall lighting

As an application by Lunux in a production hall of the metal and plastics technology company KDM Mertens Group in Gütersloh shows, modern LED technology has revolutionized the lighting of warehouses and logistics halls. It is now part of the industry standard for modern hall equipment.

LEDs are light-emitting semiconductors or light-emitting diodes which, in contrast to conventional solutions such as fluorescent lamps or light bulbs, are significantly more economical in terms of consumption. In addition to their energy efficiency, LEDs are characterized above all by their long service life of up to 80,000 operating hours. This is a major advantage, especially in logistics and storage halls with luminaires that are difficult to access due to the height of the hall. Thanks to their long service life, they require little maintenance.

Warehouse lighting has to meet special requirements in many respects. Warehouses are usually large halls with high shelves and narrow aisles in which employees or transport vehicles have to move around safely. A powerful lighting system and a sophisticated lighting concept are required to illuminate the hall and its narrow aisles homogeneously and create uniform brightness. Production halls, on the other hand, place particularly high demands on the robustness and resistance of the lighting. The lighting there must be able to withstand dirt, dust and temperature fluctuations. At the same time, optimum visual conditions and sufficient safety must be created for employees and consideration must also be given to emergency lighting systems.

Project example: The production hall of the KDM Mertens Group

Lunux Q-Rail Double Cross
The Lunux Q-Rail Double Cross is available in various versions and optics. It is suitable for all types of logistics or production halls and can also be equipped with a DALI control system.

In August 2016, the German lighting specialist Lunux was commissioned to equip the 600 m² production hall of the KDM Mertens Group in Gütersloh with lighting. KDM is a manufacturer of plastic parts for the automotive industry. Work and production in the hall is carried out in three shifts. In other words, around the clock. As the production hall was illuminated with conventional lighting technology, particularly fluorescent tubes, before the modernization, the energy costs were correspondingly high. The primary aim of modernizing the lighting and switching to LED technology was therefore to significantly reduce energy costs while improving the quality of light at the same time. By switching to LEDs, energy savings of 40 percent were achieved in the practical example, which is why the investment costs were amortized after just two years.

In order to achieve homogeneous and efficient lighting, the company opted for the Q-Rail Double Cross continuous-row lighting system after extensive consultations with the Lunux experts. A luminaire that can be equipped with different optics thanks to its modular technology and is therefore flexibly suitable for different applications and hall areas. Due to the ceiling height and in order to guarantee homogeneous hall illumination, a wide-beam optic was chosen for the project. The steel profile of the luminaire is not only robust, but also blends in perfectly with the design of the hall.

Good working in neutral white light

A total of seven parallel light strips were mounted under the ceiling using a chain suspension system. Direct attachment to the ceiling was not possible due to its nature.

Q-Rail offers the following mounting options: Chain suspension, system ceiling suspension and ceiling mounting. A total of 91 wide-beam LED modules with a color temperature of 4,000 Kelvin were installed. This corresponds to a neutral white light that provides ideal working conditions in halls. A particular challenge in the project was the use of the hall in three-shift operation. In order not to disrupt operations, the installation was carried out in sections so that work could continue as normal during the lighting installation and there was no downtime. The installation took just one week in total. This speed was made possible by the quick assembly system: The light inserts can be inserted without tools. A system that also pays off later during the operation of the system, as the lamps can be replaced without much effort.
