Marina Hein: "At Still, new construction means comprehensive intralogistics consulting"

Even in times of coronavirus, logistics centers and the expectations placed on intralogistics in them are growing. Editor-in-chief Martin Schrüfer asked industry experts about the fundamental considerations that should be made before any new construction or expansion of a logistics center and wanted to know which products are helpful.

materialfluss: What is the most important thought that should first come to mind when planning a new warehouse?

Marina Hein: The design principle "form follows function" clearly applies here. Here, the form - the design of things - is derived from their function, i.e. their intended use. From a logistical point of view, this means that the planning of a new building should be carried out from the inside out. First of all, the customer's perspective must be taken to determine the future requirements of the warehouse and which systems and processes can be used to optimally map these. The second step is to develop a layout from this. When designing the layout, the conditions of the site must also be taken into account. Once this has been harmonized, the result is a warehouse that is optimally planned for the logistical requirements, in which the building is ultimately just a shell that surrounds it.

mfl: Which product, service, strategy or technology from your portfolio comes to mind first when you think of the word new build?

Hein: At Still, "new build" means that the customer needs comprehensive intralogistics advice in order to achieve a result that is tailored to their needs. Our consultants are happy to help develop initial logistics concept ideas and work out system comparisons for the customer - especially for new build projects. After all, it is easier to talk about specific approaches than to sit in front of a completely blank sheet of paper. This is precisely where our consultants come into their own and translate a purely functional catalog of requirements into concrete, realizable concepts for the customer. Irrespective of the consulting service, Stillw can also assume responsibility for the realization of the project if desired.
