material flow: Where and with what do you start when it comes to the idea of modernization? What advice do you have for the logistics managers among our readers?
Dr. Markus Ehrmann: First of all, it is important to evaluate new requirements in terms of availability, capacity, throughput and so on. Once the logistics manager has this data, it is advisable to work with a specialist company such as Vanderlande to master the next steps. This includes comparing the requirements with the original design of the storage system, assessing the condition of the system and the structural situation. Vanderlande then shows the various options for modernization. Vanderlande offers the following (RMR) solutions: revision, a 1:1 replacement of parts; retrofit, the installation of improved parts with the same function; and modification, the conversion of the system with extended or changed functions. In addition, the possibilities for digitalizing the system for the purposes of monitoring, reporting, optimization, etc. are examined.
mfl: Which of your company's products or services is the first thing that comes to mind when you think of modernization?
Ehrmann: Vanderlande is a full-service provider for modernization measures: starting with an upgrade with more energy-efficient units, conversion or expansion of the conveyor technology through to updating outdated machine control systems as well as hardware and software as part of the RMR solutions described above. Vanderlande's portfolio also includes life cycle planning to improve the system operator's planning reliability with regard to necessary maintenance and modernization measures and the budgets required for these. Another service is the retrofitting of sensor technology, which is used to record system statuses and derive maintenance measures at an early stage through data analysis/visualization with Vanderlande tools.
