TGW automates for Swiss coffee machine manufacturer

The Swiss coffee machine specialist is once again relying on the expertise and experience of intralogistics partner TGW for the expansion of its fulfillment center in Weggis. In addition to software, control and mechatronics, the focus is also on picking workstations and preparing for the future use of autonomous mobile robots (AMR). The go-live of the new system is planned for summer 2024.

The family-owned company Thermoplan claims to be one of the global market leaders in the development and production of coffee machines. At its headquarters on the shores of Lake Lucerne, more than 400 employees manufacture fully automatic machines for restaurants, hotels, coffee house chains, bakeries and the self-service segment. Its international customers include industry giants such as Nespresso and Starbucks.

Due to the steady growth and high demand for its products, Thermoplan is already investing in its fifth plant in Weggis with the "unique" project. The fully digitally planned and LEED (Leadership Energy and Environmental Design) certified building comprises production and logistics areas as well as offices and forms the basis for development in the coming years. This will enable the coffee machine specialist to further increase the level of service for its international customers and ensure fast, reliable delivery.

Next step in the cooperation
Thermoplan has been relying on TGW's intralogistics expertise since 2019: the two companies have been working closely together as partners. In 2020, a four-aisle shuttle warehouse with more than 40,000 storage locations was put into operation in Weggis, where both components for assembling the fully automatic coffee machines and spare parts are stored.

In addition to ergonomic and efficient picking workstations, the current expansion also includes the complete connection of Plant 5 to the existing infrastructure: among other things, the KingDrive conveyor technology network is being expanded and the control system and software integrated. The so-called "gates" are already being equipped with docking stations so that the assembly stations can be automatically supplied by autonomous mobile robots (AMR) in the next step.

"We are very pleased to be able to accompany Thermoplan in its growth and to be the partner of choice once again," emphasizes Thomas Kretz, Managing Director TGW Switzerland.
