Knapp implements logistics solution at Migros Lucerne
Knapp is optimizing the existing warehouse infrastructure of Migros Lucerne - the largest private employer in Central Switzerland - with a highly automated solution for the food sector. The system will go into operation at the beginning of 2021.
With over 6,000 employees and annual sales of CHF 1.46 billion, the Migros Cooperative Lucerne is the largest private employer in Central Switzerland. Among other things, it operates 55 supermarkets and hypermarkets, 5 outlets, 9 VOI + Migros partners (VOI Migros partners is the local supplier/small store concept of the Migros Cooperatives Aare, Lucerne and Zurich), over 20 specialist markets, 21 catering locations, 3 club schools as well as sports, fitness and golf parks. The sales outlets are supplied with fresh products (dairy products, meat and sausage products, fruit and vegetables) once to three times a day or six times a week.
Highly automated solution for the food sector
With the existing warehouse infrastructure at the Dierikon site, the company is increasingly reaching its capacity limits and will not be able to cope with the planned growth by 2025. The aim was therefore to install a competitive solution with a higher degree of automation. Thanks to its many years of experience, Knapp was able to find the ideal concept for Migros Lucerne with a customized solution for fruit and vegetables. This means that another company within the Migros Group has opted for a highly automated system from Knapp. Migros Zurich, a cooperative belonging to the Migros Community, has also been using two FAST Picking solutions for several years.
"The semi-automated system currently in operation is no longer sufficient for the containers currently being processed. We increasingly have to switch to manual picking," says Arthur Blaettler, Project Manager in the Logistics division at Migros Lucerne. "Knapp offers us a solution with a very high degree of automation, especially in the area of demanding cardboard packaging. That's why we decided to work with Knapp."
Knapp as a specialist for full case picking
With the FAST Picking solution, Knapp offers the ideal concept for fully automated high-performance picking. In future, over 90% of all fresh products at the Dierikon site can be depalletized fully automatically, temporarily stored in the OSR Shuttle storage and picking system and palletized in line with store requirements. High-performance pallet and container conveyor technology connects the storage areas. The solution is scheduled to go live at the beginning of 2021.
Knapp is a specialist in full case picking and can once again demonstrate its expertise in the food sector with the implementation of this solution. Customers around the world process their orders with Knapp's fully automated picking solution. These include Axfood, Estuario Carni and many more.
