Containers bring movement to Thalia logistics

Georg Utz, specialist for reusable plastic transport packaging, has realized a comprehensive logistics project together with the book retailer Thalia. Utz supplied 360,000 custom-made containers and 432,000 lids in three different colors for Thalia's logistics locations in Marl and Hörselgau, which are specially designed to meet the requirements for direct delivery to the more than 500 bookstores in the Thalia network.

Thalia relies on a customized reusable system from Utz. The specially developed containers and lids meet high requirements for durability and stability and replace a previously used, foamed container system. They therefore meet the quality standards of the book retailer Thalia and are also designed for intensive continuous use in logistics centers. Thanks to integrated RFID technology, the Utz reusable containers can be clearly identified at any time and tracked seamlessly along the supply chain. Sealable lids additionally protect the goods from theft and tampering, while anti-slip mats reliably protect sensitive, unpackaged book covers from scratches. The combinable and bandable container-lid units guarantee process reliability in automated conveyor systems. A large dimpled area on the lids also enables simple and secure attachment of adhesive labels for the classic shipping process. The containers are made from the sustainable UIC (Utz Industrial Compound) - a high-quality secondary raw material that combines the material properties of virgin material with a significantly improved ecological profile. This contributes to the conservation of resources and the circular economy.

"The collaboration with Thalia is a prime example of how the highest level of professionalism and genuine enjoyment of the joint task can reinforce each other. Despite an extremely ambitious schedule, we worked together with a clear focus on a common goal: to create a solution that not only works - but inspires. What made this project special was the dynamic within the team: everyone took responsibility, provided impetus and actively contributed to finding a solution. The combination of expertise, commitment and fun made the project a real success story - and an experience that set new standards," says Marco Vernim, Key Account Manager at Georg Utz.

Focus on sustainability and future viability

The use of durable reusable containers saves on disposable packaging and significantly reduces the carbon footprint of logistics processes. "The implementation of the new reusable container system from Utz is an important step for us on the way to even more efficient and sustainable logistics. This is the first visible milestone in our "Logistics 2025" transformation program. We are delighted to have found a partner in Utz that has developed a fully comprehensive container within a very short space of time that reflects the requirements of both logistics and sales. The partnership with Utz was excellent right from the start and enabled us to implement this tailor-made solution within a tight schedule," explain project managers Karolin Brey and Nils Schmidt-Zöllner.
