Airfreight: Emirates SkyCargo celebrates the third anniversary of its connection to Basel

Zurich/Dubai, 25.09.2017 - Emirates SkyCargo, the cargo division of Emirates Airline, is celebrating the third anniversary of its weekly freighter service to Basel. Since the flight was launched on September 21, 2014, it has been transporting goods from and via Dubai World Central Airport (DWC) and Dubai International Airport (DXB) to more than 150 destinations worldwide in addition to passenger flights from Switzerland.

On September 21, 2014, Basel became the 40th cargo destination in Emirates SkyCargo's route network. Since then, the weekly freighter flight has supplemented the cargo capacity of the four daily passenger flights from Zurich and Geneva in the Swiss market. In total, Emirates SkyCargo offers a weekly export capacity of 600 tons for Swiss and international companies. Emirates SkyCargo's fleet consists of 13 Boeing 777 full freighters and one Boeing 747-400ERF, flying to up to 50 cargo destinations, including 15 cargo-only destinations.

The Basel-Dubai route is operated with a Boeing 777 freighter, which can carry more than 100 tons of cargo on non-stop flights of up to ten hours. This makes it one of the largest jets for oversized cargo, which can also be used for large shipments thanks to the large cargo doors on the main deck. In addition, the Emirates Boeing 777F has temperature separation on board and thus meets the requirements for the transportation of temperature-sensitive pharmaceuticals, which must be stored either frozen, refrigerated (between +2 and +8 degrees Celsius) or at room temperature (between 15 and 25 degrees Celsius), depending on the requirements. Overall, the Boeing 777F is one of the most environmentally friendly freighter aircraft with the lowest fuel consumption among cargo aircraft of comparable size.

Many well-known pharmaceutical and chemical companies are based in the Basel economic region and benefit from the modern cargo terminal at Basel EuroAirport as well as the latest infrastructure at Dubai International Airport and Dubai World Central, where temperature-sensitive freight is handled professionally throughout the entire logistics chain. In September 2016, Emirates opened a dedicated pharma cargo facility at Dubai International Airport, which features several controlled temperature zones, an automated handling system and temperature-controlled receiving and delivery truck docks. In addition, the Dubai hub has been certified by Bureau Veritas as compliant with the EU Good Distribution Practice Guidelines (GDP) for medical products. This makes Emirates SkyCargo the first cargo airline in the world to receive this GDP certification for its operations at both airports.

On the Basel route, 100 percent of the freight transported originates from Switzerland. In addition to pharmaceutical goods, Emirates SkyCargo also transports chemical products, spare parts, medical equipment, cars and works of art. Emirates' cargo division works closely with its customers to offer them the latest solutions from the market that Emirates SkyCargo makes accessible through its network of over 150 destinations from Dubai airports. Every day, 250 flights take off from both hubs.

Flight EK9748 leaves Basel EuroAirport on Saturdays at 15:40 in summer time and at 14:40 in winter time, landing at Dubai World Central Airport at 23:55 local time. By operating the flights on Saturdays, Emirates SkyCargo ensures that the goods are transported to their final destination in time for the end of the weekend due to the short turnaround time. Additional charter connections to and from Basel will be operated by Emirates SkyCargo on request.

In addition to the three-year anniversary of the cargo route to and from Basel, Emirates also celebrated the 25th anniversary of scheduled passenger flights in Switzerland in August 2017. The airline offers leisure and business travelers a total of four daily flights from Zurich and Geneva to Dubai and from there ideal connections to destinations within the Emirates route network. red
