EK Automation goes outside

Martin Schrüfer,

Fit for automated material and goods flow outdoors

The transport robotics specialist also designs solutions for outdoor transport automation, for example for area linking. With adapted technical equipment for the vehicles and navigation specially designed for outdoor operation, the systems take into account the special requirements of outdoor areas.

EK Automation offers solutions with customized driverless transporters from the Custom Move series. The robust automated guided vehicles (AGVs) are special designs that the transport robotics specialist manufactures on the basis of individual components. For outdoor operation, they are equipped with superstructures that completely enclose the transported goods and protect them from various weather conditions. The superstructures can be equipped with roller shutters, among other things. Automated load transfer takes place via integrated conveyor technology. Enclosures that have to maintain a specified temperature (heat or cold) for sensitive products can also be implemented. The Custom Move vehicles are characterized by a long service life. According to the company, some of the systems installed by EK Automation in outdoor areas have already been in use for almost two decades.

Personal protection laser scanners are used as standard for indoor AGVs. Outdoor vehicles were previously equipped with tactile impact protection, which stopped the AGV on contact. Since last year, the SICK outdoorScan3 has been available as a non-contact laser safety technology for outdoor AGVs. This means that the vehicles can also travel safely outdoors at higher speeds. In outdoor transportation automation, vehicles are often navigated using inductive guidance. RFID navigation now offers more flexibility: RFID tags are installed on the ground at fixed intervals, which are read by the vehicle.
