External warehouse expanded
io-consultants expands logistics at Adolf Würth
Adolf Würth, a specialist in assembly and fastening materials based in Künzelsau, put a new transshipment warehouse into operation at the Hohenlohe business park in Kupferzell in May 2020. The technical planning and consulting company io-consultants optimized the logistics expansion of the central external warehouse in close cooperation with its subsidiary io-DigitalSolutions GmbH and implemented the project from concept planning to commissioning, starting in 2017.
The 50,000 square meter transshipment warehouse supplies customers throughout Europe. Around 73 million euros were invested in the warehouse and the conversion of the dispatch area. When it is completed in 2024, 300 employees will be working there. The new transshipment warehouse is multifunctional and has been the hub for European goods handling since it went live. The aim is to improve service quality and speed up deliveries to customers. To this end, several shipping points and external warehouses, which were previously located within a radius of around 80 kilometers around Künzelsau, have been consolidated into the 50,000 square meters of storage space at the transshipment warehouse.
Following successful completion, the transshipment warehouse has 12,800 pallet spaces and 72 docking points for loading and unloading trucks. The heart of the warehouse is a manual pallet racking warehouse measuring approximately 180 meters by 90 meters, which has been divided into eight picking zones and extends over two building sections. Automated guided vehicles are used to transfer the picking trolleys from one zone to another and to supply the packing department. SAP EWM is used as the warehouse management and control system, and io-DigitalSolutions supported its introduction from the design phase through implementation and test phases to commissioning in parallel with the logistics sub-project.
"Our customers and we as a company benefit equally from our new transshipment warehouse. The realization of the project also represents a further intensification of the cooperation between Würth and io-consultants. Considering the size of the project, we had very few frictional losses, which was made possible by the exceptional performance of the entire team," emphasizes Jörg Becker, responsible for logistics projects in the Würth Group and overall project manager. io-consultants already supported the new construction of the Western Distribution Center, which began operations in 2015.
