600,000 packaging units per day
Coop invests in automation solution from SSI Schaefer
Coop, food retailer in Sweden, commissions SSI Schaefer as general contractor for intralogistics to implement a logistics solution for the new 77,000 m² distribution center in Eskilstuna, Sweden.
In future, the new distribution center in the center of Sweden will supply the more than 800 stores in the interior of the country with goods. A large part of the material flow for chilled and non-chilled products will be handled by two highly automated case picking solutions. Once completed, Coop's new logistics center will achieve a throughput of more than 600,000 packaging units per day.
SSI Schaefer relies on its 3D Matrix Solution for the solution for the food retailer. The system enables Coop to achieve both its flexibility and efficiency targets, while at the same time ensuring store-specific palletization. The shuttle system from SSI Schaefer is responsible for the sequenced provision of packages to case picking robots and workstations for single item picking. By integrating the robotic solutions, Coop's entire supply chain can be optimized - from the distribution center and transport to the stores and thus the end customers.
As Sweden's leading food retailer and winner of the "Sweden's Most Sustainable Retailer" award, which covers the majority of its transport by train, Coop is integrating the new distribution center into the nationwide rail network. This will reduce road transportation and the carbon footprint. According to SSI Schaefer, the intralogistics expert's approach to sustainability, which is currently also being presented as part of the "50 Sustainability and Climate Leaders" initiative, was a decisive factor in Coop's decision to choose the company as a long-term partner for this project. The facility is being built in the logistics park in Eskilstuna and is expected to be fully operational in the second half of 2024.
To ensure the maintenance of one of the world's largest automation solutions, SSI Schaefer is also supporting the development of a two-year training program in automation and robotics technology with another partner, unfortunately not named in the press release, and the Swedish education system, thus playing an active role in the training of technicians.
