VDMA: Intralogistics sector on course for growth

Sascha Schmel, Managing Director VDMA Materials Handling and Intralogistics Association

At the start of the CeMAT trade fair, the VDMA Materials Handling and Intralogistics Association reported a positive economic trend. German manufacturers of materials handling and intralogistics solutions had a good start to 2016 overall, with the industry recording a 4.1% increase in incoming orders in the first quarter compared to the same period last year. "The strongest impetus came from Germany and the European domestic market. As things stand, we can confirm the growth of 3% forecast for 2016," explains Sascha Schmel, Managing Director of the VDMA Materials Handling and Intralogistics Association.

World champion title in exports remains in Germany

The industry is characterized by a high export share. In 2015, German manufacturers exported products and solutions worth 13.8 billion euros, another 5% more than in 2014, meaning that Germany remains the world's leading exporter of conveyor technology and intralogistics. The global export volume of the industry also grew strongly once again in 2015 - by 6% to an estimated 75.4 billion euros.

International and networked

Exhibitors from 44 countries awaited an equally international trade fair audience in Hanover. This year, everything revolved around intelligent networking under the guiding theme of "Smart Supply Chain Solutions". "Hardly anything has changed intralogistics as much in recent years as the internet. Increasing digitalization is changing products and business models in equal measure. I am delighted that we will certainly see numerous networked or automated solutions and concepts for all areas of application at CeMAT," said Sascha Schmel.
