Top Canadian retailer invests in OPM technology from Witron
Metro Inc., one of the market leaders in Canadian food retail with sales of over 12 billion Canadian dollars and more than 65,000 employees, will rely on the storage and picking solutions of Parkstein-based general contractor Witron Logistik + Informatik GmbH for its new distribution center in Toronto, Canada. From 2021, more than 250 stores in the Ontario region will be supplied from here with a range of 3,600 different frozen products.

"This investment will allow Metro to continue its growth and expansion in the province of Ontario," says Eric R. La Fleche, President and CEO of Metro. "It also allows us to better respond to the needs of our customers through a new and modernized supply chain infrastructure."
Thanks to the automated logistics systems OPM (Order Picking Machinery) - with nine COM machines (Case Order Machines) - and CPS (Car Picking System), we can assemble up to 112,700 retail units and more than 100 full pallets on a peak day without errors and in line with store requirements for dispatch to the Metro stores. A five-aisle high-bay warehouse with 12,500 pallet spaces and a small parts warehouse with 118,800 tray spaces are also integrated. Innovative conveyor technology elements and 18 high-speed storage and retrieval machines - developed and built by Witron subsidiary FAS - ensure maximum availability even at an ambient temperature of minus 28 degrees Celsius.
"The new distribution center will be equipped with state-of-the-art technology that will further improve our efficiency, the service in our store network and our customer service," explains Carmen Fortino, Executive Vice President and Metro Ontario Division Head.
As the general contractor, Witron is responsible for the entire planning and implementation of all IT, control and mechanical components. Service and maintenance of the system are also part of the service portfolio of the Parkstein logistics experts, who will provide permanent on-site maintenance and technical support with an on-site team. This also includes "system operation" and "production management" once the system is up and running.
