Freight wagon check via AI

DB Cargo relies on artificial intelligence: it is now possible to use AI to read the status and, more recently, important operating data of freight wagons in shunting yards literally as they roll past.

The company is already using existing camera bridges for this purpose. The "digital eye" is intended to ensure faster operations and therefore more freight on the climate-friendly railways. DB Cargo has already been using camera bridges for digital diagnostics of freight wagons throughout the country for some time. There are a total of 13 camera bridges at the eight largest freight stations in Germany. Freight trains pass through portals equipped with high-speed cameras and lighting. An AI analyzes the recorded images for damage.

Time-consuming manual processes reduced

Another feature is now being rolled out: the most important wagon information can be read and analyzed in seconds using AI. The wagon labels contain essential operating data such as tare weight, brakes, load dimensions and much more. Checking this data is a legal requirement and must be carried out every time a train is formed.

Previously, employees with long computerized lists had to do this work manually, which took a lot of time. With the new AI-supported image processing, DB Cargo can precisely recognize and process the 15 most important addresses of a freight wagon. The new AI technology is now being tested throughout Germany. It should speed up the provision of freight wagons and at the same time make the work of employees considerably easier.
