The Gesellschaft zur Förderung des Strukturwandels in der Arbeitsgesellschaft e. V. (JRC) honored ten Hompel in particular for his active and communicative contribution to Dortmund's urban society. Ina Brandes, Minister for Culture and Science of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia, gave the laudatory speech at the award ceremony.

With the introduction of mass-produced artificial intelligence (AI) such as ChatGPT, questions about its responsible use are increasingly moving to the center of society. The smart use of AI is also a key topic at Fraunhofer IML. With its focus on self-organizing systems in logistics, the institute has long been involved with AI and machine learning.

"As one of the first and most important institutions in the Technology Park, the Fraunhofer IML plays a key role in shaping Dortmund's scientific and economic landscape. Thanks to its many years of experience with the sensible use of artificial intelligence, the institute makes an important contribution to the responsible use of technology in science, business and society," said Dr. Bettina Horster, Chairwoman of the JRC, explaining the award. It is not only artificial intelligence that needs to keep learning.

People also need to learn how to use the new technology appropriately. In the presentation "Learning what we don't understand - AI and its application in logistics", ten Hompel explained how AI can be used sensibly as part of the award ceremony.
