Willibald A. Günthner's long career in logistics began while he was studying mechanical engineering and completing his doctorate at the Technical University of Munich. In 1985, he became design and technical manager for conveyor and material flow technology at Max Kettner. Four years later, he took over the professorship for conveyor and material flow technology at the Regensburg University of Applied Sciences until he accepted the call to the Technical University of Munich in 1994. There he developed the fml chair into one of the leading chairs in the field of material flow and logistics with around 60 employees.

At the same time, the chair celebrated its 110th anniversary with the ceremony. In 1907, the then Technical University of Munich founded the Chair of Lifting Equipment and Conveyor Systems, which was filled by Professor Rudolf Krell, a crane construction expert from the industry. He was followed by Professors Erich vom Ende and Fritz Dreher. With the appointment of Professor Siegfried Böttcher in 1974, Günthner's direct predecessor, the chair was renamed the "Chair and Institute of Materials Handling" and the subject area was expanded to include the calculation and design of materials handling equipment.
