Modernization

Modernization of warehouse processes

Trio Leuchten, a provider of decorative home lighting, has optimized its warehouse operations by working with Scheffer & Hille and implementing the StayLinked terminal emulation software SmartTE and the no-code IIoT technology platform Evolve.

"Like many other companies, we were suffering from the biggest productivity killer in the field of digital warehouse management: aborted terminal sessions," explained Peter Schulte, Logistics Manager at Trio Leuchten. "We have around 100 Honeywell handheld computers in use here for picking goods. Terminal sessions were repeatedly interrupted when employees were out of range of the WLAN or their devices ran out of battery. Aborted sessions, whatever the cause in detail, led to considerable disruption. We had to get this problem under control." In addition, the previous terminal emulation (TE) software did not allow the mobile devices to be configured from a central location, meaning that even the smallest configuration changes were time-consuming.

Due to its extensive experience in successfully delivering warehouse solutions and its outstanding knowledge of StayLinked solutions, Scheffer & Hille worked closely with software developer Manuel Nieder at Trio to replace the existing TE solution with StayLinked SmartTE software. One of the great strengths of this solution is that it allows the implementation of Evolve, StayLinked's no-code IIoT technology platform. Evolve enables new technologies to be quickly, easily and seamlessly linked to an existing warehouse management system (WMS), providing a low-risk, cost-effective approach to the introduction of new technologies. The platform enables the WMS to speak the same language as new technologies, so they can be incorporated into the WMS without costly integration. Existing workflows are quickly extended without the need for programming or scripting.

New technology for existing warehouse management system

"Evolve was key to meeting Trio Leuchten's requirement to equip warehouse staff with the ProGlove Mark Display. This device is an extremely lightweight wearable scanner with an integrated display that can be worn like a glove, enabling order picking with two free hands," said Sebastian Finke, Managing Director of Scheffer & Hille.

From an integrator's perspective, the introduction of a new technology into the proprietary WMS was potentially problematic. Many things had to be considered: the stability of the data connection between the ProGlove and its mobile computer, the way in which the employee could easily and reliably pair the two systems, how the required data could be transferred to the ProGlove display and the speed with which desired changes could be implemented. "Now that we have successfully implemented the solution, I can safely say that none of the above requirements posed a problem," explained Sebastian Finke.

Productivity loss eliminated

"With StayLinked SmartTE and the included True Session Persistence, Scheffer & Hille has eliminated the loss of productivity and disruption caused by dropped sessions. SmartTE has also enabled us to configure applications on mobile devices much faster and easier," added Peter Schulte of Trio Leuchten. "StayLinked SmartTE and Evolve have revolutionized our warehouse operations," concluded Peter Schulte.
