Groundbreaking ceremony
SICK new building in Waldkirch
The symbolic ground-breaking ceremony marked the start of construction of the new office building at SICK. Representatives of SICK AG, the founding family, the town of Waldkirch, Ochs Schmidhuber Architekten (OSA) and Dürrschnabel Industriebau lent a helping hand on the company premises in Waldkirch. SICK is building new office space of around 9,300 square meters for over 500 modern workplaces. The anticipated construction costs amount to around EUR 29 million. Completion is planned for the first quarter of 2025.
The demolition of the old office building, which previously stood on the same site, took just under five months. This was the first building constructed by SICK on the site, dating back to 1977. The inventive spirit and spirit that Dr. Erwin Sick lent to the old building will be taken up again in the new building. Among other things, this will be realized through a "Dr. Erwin Sick Loggia": His personal office with outdoor terrace in the old building will be immortalized in a modern interpretation in the new building in the form of a loggia.
As part of the ground-breaking ceremony, a time capsule was placed in the ground by Sebastian Glaser, grandson of company founder Dr. Erwin Sick and member of the Supervisory Board. It contains a photo of Dr. Erwin Sick, a current edition of the Badische Zeitung Waldkirch newspaper and construction plans of the old and new building.
"The former building had great significance for the family. The first building constructed by SICK itself on the site reflected the growth at the time and also the successful, long-term arrival in Waldkirch. We are now investing in a new building that will consolidate this and at the same time preserve the inventive spirit of my grandfather. He had his office in the historic building - I am particularly pleased that this office is being taken up in a modern interpretation in the new building and that the memory of his creative power is being preserved," says Sebastian Glaser.
Dr. Mats Gökstorp, Chairman of the Executive Board of SICK AG, and Nicole Kurek, Board Member for People & Culture at SICK AG, responsible for Facility Management among other things, welcomed the guests.
Nicole Kurek comments: "In the new office space, we are creating harmony between people, corporate culture and the workplace. Good ideas are given a new place to unfold and develop, turning them into innovations."
In addition to Dr. Mats Gökstorp, Nicole Kurek and Sebastian Glaser, Renate Sick-Glaser and Dorothea Sick-Thies, the daughters of Dr. Erwin Sick, Waldkirch's mayor Roman Götzmann, architect Florian Schmidhuber, general contractor Markus Keune and Sascha Pautler, Head of Facility Management at SICK AG, also lent a hand at the ground-breaking ceremony.
"The future is made of courage - that's what the magazine for SICK's last annual report said. With this meaningful symbol at the entrance to our town, you have once again made a bold and long-term commitment to Waldkirch as a business location. This is also a beautiful symbol of the sustainable and long-term orientation with a view to future generations," said Mayor Götzmann.
Transparency, innovation and a down-to-earth approach in the new building
The new building is divided into two sections, Building Section A South and Building Section A North. All routes converge in the south section. This will create a central hub on the site that can be reached from all sides and promotes direct personal interaction. Office space will also be created. The northern section will be located on the edge of the campus and will be significantly visible from Freiburger Strasse. It will also contain office space. The two sections differ primarily in terms of their exterior architecture: while the central southern section has crossed reinforced concrete columns behind an X-shaped glass façade - symbolizing inventiveness, creativity, networking and collaboration - the northern section of the building has clear, straight structures and is also transparent with a glass façade. The entire building with its two sections radiates an uncomplicated, down-to-earth calm that is intended to have an inviting effect on employees and guests. It is transparent and open: open to collaboration, competence, courage and creativity, diversity and innovation.
