Energy chain systems
New quality products in continuous use
Under tropical conditions or in deep-freeze warehouses - with a throughput of up to 30 double cycles per hour, high availability of the storage and retrieval machines is essential. For many years, intralogistics provider SSI Schäfer has relied on pre-assembled energy chain systems from igus for the vertical movements of its storage and retrieval machines. Together with connectors from Harting, they ensure long-term availability in SSI Schäfer's systems.
We plan and design integrated intralogistics solutions tailored to all industries," explains Markus Sellen, Product Manager Storage Technology at SSI Schaefer. "As a globally active general contractor, we implement complex logistics systems, from system planning and consulting to turnkey systems and customized service and maintenance offers. High-performance software solutions to cover processes from warehouse to material flow management round off our service portfolio." In order to work as flexibly and efficiently as possible, SSI Schaefer largely relies on standardized assemblies in order to procure subsystems from a single source. This also applies to the energy supply to the storage and retrieval machines (SRMs). Since the introduction of the "Exyz" in 2012, SSI Schaefer has relied on pre-assembled energy chain systems for upward and downward movements. The ready-to-connect "readychain" systems from igus optimize the procurement process, reduce internal logistics costs and assembly times. The system solution consists of an E2/000 series energy chain, chainflex control and data cables as well as bus and motor cables. If the RBG is used in the deep-freeze area at up to -30 °C or in the fresh food area at up to +5 °C, the system is also equipped with Harting connectors.
Cost and energy efficiency in warehouse logistics
The Exyz is ideal for the fully automated storage of pallets. The SRM can be used as a single-master or dual-master with one or two load handling devices for single, double or multiple-deep storage and retrieval, including SSI Orbiter LHD.
The configuration is modular. The components are manufactured in series, pre-assembled in the factory, tested and shipped before being put into operation worldwide within a very short time. "Despite a high level of standardization, we offer our customers customer-specific solutions that guarantee both high functionality and cost-effectiveness during operation without compromising on safety," summarizes Markus Sellen. The readychains from igus configured for the respective application fit perfectly into the system, ready-made energy chains that are fitted with cables and connectors according to customer requirements.
Pre-assembled energy chains save assembly work
"We have been relying on igus energy supply systems for many years," says Sebastian Leimeister, Team Leader Warehouse Machine Hardware at SSI Schaefer, looking back. Before the introduction of Exyz, the company assembled its own products. "Since 2012, for economic reasons, only pre-assembled systems have been used, which only need to be installed at the respective construction site." igus assembles with machinery that in-house assembly understandably cannot provide.
"We were supported at all times to find a solution to the problem," says Sellen. "Today, a pre-tested system is packed in a load carrier and delivered to the respective construction site. There, the system only needs to be connected on site," explains Till Brinkmann.
RBG - Safety with Harting connectors
Storage and retrieval machines must function reliably at temperatures as low as -30 °C in deep-freeze environments. It is therefore essential that all components are designed and approved accordingly. To ensure high availability of the system components and to keep maintenance and repair costs to a minimum, igus focuses on connectors that work reliably even at sub-zero temperatures.
Harting connectors from the Han series, which are assembled by igus using crimping machines, are used in the refrigeration sector. These industrial connectors have been designed, among other things, for the combination of different transmission media in one connector. A comprehensive range of accessories meets individual customer requirements. "This is how we ensure the required variability in cable configurations," Brinkmann clarifies. Leimeister explains: "For us, it is important that disassembly and assembly, which is sometimes carried out at great heights on the mast, can be carried out easily and with gloves due to the cold.
can be carried out with gloves due to the cold." This is ensured, among other things, by clip locks on the connectors. "As a general contractor, we bear full responsibility for our customers' intralogistics systems," clarifies Sellen. "For this reason, we only work with suppliers who, on the one hand, take the system concept into account and, on the other, anticipate technical requirements in order to provide the appropriate solutions and further developments. The system partnership with igus has proven itself right from the start."
