Martin Schrüfer,

Editorial: Courage and change

Dear readers,

"Courage and change" is the title of the guest article by BVL CEO Robert Blackburn, which you can read on pages 38 and 39. As I mentioned in the last issue, I still have my problems with "courage" as a motto. To my ears, the call for or reminder of courage sounds too vague. Because what is meant? Greta Thunberg courage or everyday courage, for example, calculating with a punctual train journey?

I can do a lot more with the concept of change and suggest not looking at the big picture of global politics, but starting with our own company. Keyword climate change: save paper. Question business trips. Subsidies for public transport tickets for employees. Buying a video conferencing system that makes Skype compromises ("Can you hear me ...?" / "Can you please come closer to the microphone ...." / "Which microphone?" and so on) superfluous.

That sounds almost provocatively boring. But sustainable management starts on a small scale and it has one advantage: this is where the "quick wins" that every manager loves so much can be realized simply and measurably. In any case, this approach seems more feasible to me than large-scale announcements such as those recently made by the Formula 1 organizers. It was said that they wanted to make the annual racing circus climate-neutral by 2030.

How is that supposed to work? Ask me something easier. The easiest way to make Formula 1 climate-neutral would be to end it. But even that is too radical and politically motivated, the truth lies in the middle. Switching to synthetic fuels, for example, is worth a look, especially as money is not an issue here anyway and the findings can perhaps be transferred to everyday life.

I wish you a little reflection over the coming days, with a focus on old values, and peace and quiet - and then an unreasonably brisk start to the new year. Have a good time, you can read the courageous and versatile LT-manager again at LogiMAT 2020.

Yours
